Reflections on Hummingbird

Nature has always been intimately connected to the world of my prayers, reflection, and meditation. As I look at a rose and inhale its fragrance, I do not see just a piece of nature. I see a divine token, “a light that will leads me unto the ocean of His presence”; as Baha’u’llah has taught me.

It was the day I was working in the garden with my young friend Jose, that we discovered the tiny nest and the two eggs half the size of a pea. What a wonder, the tiny and mighty hummingbird has built its blessed nest in our rose garden!! It is built where I can intimately watch and observe without the slightest disturbance to its safety or peace. Watching this wondrous bird caring for its nest and then for its babes, has flooded my mind with so many learnings and so much awe! Watching her, I am learning about consistency, focus, perseverance, single-mindedness, wisdom, safety, protection, and the mystery of asking and turning to God in prayer. Now my words go even deeper when I utter the part of the Long Obligatory Prayer that says: “To make of my prayer a fire that will burn away the veils which have shut me out from Thy beauty, and a light that will lead me unto the ocean of Thy Presence.”

Daily I find myself drawn to keep an eye on this tiny bird and learn the mysteries of God in its wondrous creation and in rushes many thoughts and reflections about life, death, love, and dedication, about sacrifice with no expectation of rewards or punishment. I see in the struggles of the tiny bird and the attribute of independent of aught else except God, asking what is the purpose of God.

As a psychotherapist, I teach about choice and making the right choice. What is the right choice for our children when they see rows and rows of inviting packages of cereal winking at them?? Animals do not exercise choice the way humans are given the power of choice. I wonder how overwhelming life can become when we have a such an unrestricted number of choices with little guidance for finding our way out of the mazes of choice! The hummingbird does not worry about choice. It is guided to do God’s will and it appears that the in its conformity, it is also protected. The place where the hummingbird has built its nest is a real wonder. It is in the midst of the thorns and leaves of my rose bushes. No predator would find it tempting to risk its skin against the thorny rose stems surrounding its nest. What is about this mother bird that has mesmerized me for hours so much that the first thought I think about when I wake up is how is the hummingbird in my garden!!

In my follow-up stories, I hope to discover more and have the time to share the lessons I learn.
