Abstract

Since China’s reformation and opening to the outside world, education has made remarkable strives in its development. It has played an active role in the motivation of economic construction and social development. But in the transition from a planned economy to a challenging market economy, people demand and expect more from our education systems; however, there are significant lingering problems associated with outdated education concepts, the bureaucratic educational systems, and the failure of previous educational strategies. In this writer’s opinion, one of the most important and urgent challenges of the 21St century is to comb carefully, deal with these problems seriously, and overthrow and solve them actively with scientific concepts.

The ten problems are presented below:

  • 1. Inconsistent development in basic education;
  • 2. Stagnation of education development in the countryside;
  • 3. Commercialized substandard education;
  • 4. Bureaucratic administration of principals and teachers;
  • 5. Excessive profit-orientation of private education;
  • 6. Education assessments are not consistent with human values;
  • 7. Excessive concern about knowledge learning while neglecting ability training;
  • 8. Unrealistic expectations and emphasis on new curriculum;
  • 9. Difficulties of involving children from moving-population families;
  • 10. The professional ambition of educators overshadows the true goals of education.
